Great lessons with attention to detail and individual corrections. Bruno has a very deep technical understanding of tango and knows very well how to translate that into a lesson. I always leave with a smile :)

David H.

One of the best tango schools in London. I started as a beginner and the teacher- Bruno has helped me tremendously with my technique, figures and musicality. Now I’m feeling much more confident of my dancing. Also, the dance community here is very friendly and welcoming so it’s pretty easy to find a dance partner if you do not come with one. Highly recommend!!!

Cindy N.

Best tango teacher in London!!! I highly recommend both group and private classes!
I also really love the milonga, the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming :)

FAQs

Can I register for the whole year?2025-10-20T20:07:58+01:00

Absolutely. And we’ll even offer a special discount for annual registrations. Starting at the beginning of a term is best, check out our yearly curriculum or contact us directly for more info.

Can I learn both roles of tango dancing, leading and following?2025-10-20T20:05:15+01:00

Yes, and we encourage it! Role-swapping deepens your understanding of the dance. Whether you’re learning both or focusing on one, let us know — we’re happy to support your journey either way.

What if I only want to dance with my partner?2025-10-20T20:03:26+01:00

That’s totally okay. While tango is typically a social dance, we respect your preferences. Just let your instructor know at the start of class and you’ll only dance with your partner.

How long does it take to learn Argentine tango?2025-10-20T20:01:34+01:00

Everyone learns at their own pace. Prior experience with sports or dance helps, but what matters most is consistency and enjoyment. Combine group and private lessons, attend our milongas, and stay curious. That’s the real secret to progress.

What should I wear to tango class?2025-10-20T20:00:25+01:00

Wear something comfy that lets you move easily, skip the boots and opt for shoes with leather soles that allow pivoting. Loose clothes can make it harder for instructors to check your posture, so fitted is better. Once you fall in love with tango (you will!), we can help you choose your perfect tango shoes.

Do I need a partner to join?2025-10-20T19:58:52+01:00

Not at all. You’re welcome to come solo! In group classes, we rotate partners to help you learn from different leading and following styles. For private classes, you can attend alone or with a partner, both options work great.

Do I need to book in advance?2025-10-20T19:57:32+01:00

No need to book for group classes, just show up! For private tango lessons, booking is required and can be done directly on our website. All classes take place in North London.

What tango class level am I?2025-10-20T19:55:20+01:00

To help you pick the right class, we’ve created a handy level guide. The best approach is to master one level before moving up, we promise, it’s more enjoyable that way. You can always complement group classes with private lessons if you’re looking to progress faster or refine your technique.

Is Argentine tango for beginners, even if I have two left feet?2025-10-20T19:52:04+01:00

Absolutely! Argentine tango is an improvised, graceful dance with no abrupt moves, very different from the dramatic film version. You’ll learn at your own pace through a structured, friendly approach. Whether you’ve never danced before or think you’re uncoordinated, tango can work for you, and every step can be beautiful.

What kind of music is played at a milonga?2025-10-15T12:12:12+01:00

Traditional milongas mainly feature tango, milonga, and vals (Argentine waltz) music — usually by orchestras from the Golden Age of tango like Di Sarli, D’Arienzo, or Pugliese. Music is grouped into tandas with short breaks (cortinas) between each set, giving dancers time to switch partners and reset the mood.

Can beginners attend a milonga?2025-10-15T12:10:52+01:00

Yes! Beginners are welcome at many milongas, especially those labeled as “prácticas” or “beginner-friendly.” It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the tango community, observe experienced dancers, and gain confidence. At Tanguito, all beginner classes are followed by a relaxed social dancing session to help you ease in.

What should I wear to a milonga?2025-10-15T12:09:34+01:00

Milongas often lean towards smart-casual attire. Comfortable yet elegant clothing is common — and shoes that allow pivoting and gliding on the dance floor are a must. Many dancers wear tango-specific shoes with leather or suede soles. While formal wear isn’t required, dressing nicely is part of the social atmosphere.

What is a cabeceo in tango?2025-10-15T12:08:38+01:00

The cabeceo is the traditional way to invite someone to dance at a milonga. Instead of asking verbally, dancers make eye contact from a distance and use a small head movement (a nod) to confirm. This subtle invitation avoids public refusals and adds to the respectful, nonverbal nature of Argentine tango.

What is a tanda?2025-10-15T12:07:13+01:00

A tanda is a set of 3 to 5 tango songs played in a row by the same orchestra and often of the same style. Dancers usually dance the full tanda with the same partner before returning to their seats. It’s a tradition rooted in Argentine tango culture and helps structure the flow of a milonga.

Is Argentine tango still danced today?2025-09-05T10:58:18+01:00

Yes! Argentine tango is danced all over the world today, with thriving tango communities in nearly every major city. There are many modern styles, including tango salón, tango nuevo, and stage tango. It continues to evolve while staying rooted in its emotional depth and rich cultural history. You can also join one of our beginners classes to learn tango in a friendly environment.

How did tango spread around the world?2025-09-05T10:56:33+01:00

Tango began its global journey in the early 1900s, first gaining fame in Paris before becoming popular in London, Berlin, New York, and beyond. Tango’s rise in Europe gave it social acceptance in Argentina, and from there it became a worldwide phenomenon — featured in films, stage shows, and dance competitions.

What was the Golden Age of Tango?2025-09-05T10:55:17+01:00

The Golden Age of tango took place during the 1930s and 1940s in Argentina. During this period, tango music and dance reached peak popularity, with legendary orchestras, singers, and dancers performing to packed venues. Tango salón (social tango) thrived, and the dance became a defining cultural expression of the era.

What is the history of tango dancing in Argentina?2025-09-05T10:54:14+01:00

Tango dance history in Argentina began as a form of expression for immigrants and marginalized groups. Originally danced by men in slums and brothels, tango gradually made its way into cafes, clubs, and dance halls. Though once looked down upon by high society, it eventually gained national and global recognition — becoming a symbol of Argentine identity.

What is the true origin of the word “tango”?2025-09-05T10:52:53+01:00

The exact origin of the word “tango” is debated. Some theories suggest Latin roots from tangir (to play an instrument), while others trace it to African traditions, where “tango” meant a gathering for dancing or a closed space. Regardless, by the early 20th century, the word was widely associated with the music and dance born in Buenos Aires.

Where did the tango dance originate?2025-09-05T10:51:58+01:00

The tango originated in the late 1800s in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the working-class neighborhoods and immigrant communities. Its roots reflect a fusion of African, European, and local influences — including candombe, habanera, milonga, and waltz rhythms. Though Uruguay also contributed to its evolution, most historians agree that Argentine tango was born in Argentina.

Can I join without a dance partner?2025-08-08T14:37:00+01:00

Absolutely. Many participants come solo and leave with new dance friends. We rotate partners during group classes and milongas to help everyone feel included.

How much dance experience do I need to join a tango holiday?2025-08-08T14:37:36+01:00

All levels are welcome! Whether you’re a complete beginner or have years of tango behind you, our holidays are designed to offer something for everyone. You’ll be grouped appropriately for classes and guided throughout.

I’m shy and nervous — is tango for me?2025-09-05T08:37:03+01:00

Yes! Tango is a welcoming and expressive dance that suits all personalities and backgrounds. At Tanguito, we create a safe, encouraging space where you can grow at your pace, laugh at your mistakes, and enjoy every step of the journey.

How long will it take to learn Argentine tango?2025-09-05T08:35:13+01:00

Everyone progresses at their own pace. But with consistent attendance and practice, most students start feeling confident after just a few weeks. Our structured tango curriculum ensures that each class builds on the last.

How much do beginner tango classes cost?2025-09-05T08:37:33+01:00

Your first tango class comes with a discount, and we offer affordable packages (like £50 for 5 classes). You can also explore our full course or monthly subscriptions for even more savings.

Where do the tango classes take place?2025-09-05T08:34:30+01:00

Our group classes happen weekly in Angel, North London, at New Unity Hall — easily accessible and full of friendly faces. You’ll be joining a welcoming community from your very first class.

Do I need to come with a dance partner?2025-09-05T08:35:53+01:00

Not at all. Most of our students come solo. We rotate partners during class so you can learn to dance with a variety of people — it’s the best way to grow your skills and build confidence.

What should I wear to my first tango class?2025-09-05T08:31:35+01:00

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move easily. For shoes, opt for leather soles or anything that allows you to pivot — avoid rubber soles or boots. If you don’t have tango shoes yet, no worries! We’ll help you figure out what works best.

I’ve never danced before — can I really learn tango?2025-09-05T08:31:10+01:00

Yes, absolutely! Our Argentine tango classes for beginners in London are designed specifically for those with no prior dance experience. We guide you step by step in a friendly, relaxed setting where fun and progress go hand in hand.

Is tango for me? I have two left feet!2020-07-07T20:30:49+01:00

There are no abrupt moves in Argentine tango, so if you think rose between teeth, this is the cinema version of tango!

Steps are taught, yes, but it’s up to everyone to decide how to dance and what steps to use. That’s because Argentine tango is improvised. Every step, even the simplest, can look beautiful if there is good chemistry between partners, so there’s no need to rush it, very often less is more.

Tango is more skilled than some other dances, yup, that’s true, but once it all clicks into place, no dance is ever the same, so it never gets boring.

In both our tango group and private classes, we use a structured approach to make sure you learn at your own pace, in a way that you feel comfortable.

What level am I?2020-07-07T20:18:36+01:00

Sometimes it is a bit tricky to assess how advanced we are in tango.

For this reason, we have developed a quick guideline to help you determine which tango classes to attend. Remember, it’s better not to jump the gun and avoid going to classes that are not appropriate for your level. You might find it frustrating and struggle to understand the concepts. Tango is a beautiful journey and every stage of it should be cherished!

A quote from VeryTango which we really like: “Beginners want to dance like intermediates; intermediates want to dance like advanced dancers; advanced dancers want to dance like the greats; but the greats always go back to basics.” 🙂

To be comfortable at a level, you should be able to tick the boxes of that level. And if you feel you are lacking some elements and would like to move one level up, you can always complement your group lessons with private tuition – the best way to do improve and solidify what you learned.

The best way to really master and enjoy tango is to have a well-rounded approach and mix tango classes with our friendly Los Angelitos milonga, the perfect occasion to try the steps you’ve just learned and make new friends. Our weekly North London milonga is where tango magic truly comes to life.

If you have any question about your level or which workshop to attend, please don’t hesitate to send us an email: info [@] tanguito.co.uk

Argentine tango level guide by Tanguito, Argentine tango academy in London

Do I need to book in advance?2024-08-28T22:47:06+01:00

Tango group classes are drop in, no booking is needed. Just show up! For private classes, you do need to book, which you can do here. All our classes are in North London.

Do I need a dance partner?2020-07-07T20:20:56+01:00

Nope, you don’t need to come with a dancer partner.

During our tango group classes, we make sure everyone gets to dance with a variety of partners, which is the best way to learn tango. This way, leaders are exposed to different followers and can be more flexible in their leading and followers can experience different leading styles using a repertoire of steps.

As for tango private classes, you can either come with a dancer partner or on your own and dance with one of Tanguito’s professional instructors. Both work really well and there are benefits from both ways of doing things.

What to wear, what to wear?2020-07-07T20:21:48+01:00

First off, give boots the boot! Dance shoes or indoor sneakers that let you pivot and slide easily are preferred. If you don’t have tango shoes (yet), any comfortable shoes with leather soles will do!

Of course, once you catch the tango bug, you’ll want some real tango shoes, and we can’t blame you. They are stunning, they’ll never nag you and will definitely improve your posture and style. To check out what to buy, have a look at our section on men shoes and ladies shoes.

As for clothes, anything that lets you move comfortably and that is not too baggy will do: if what you wear is too baggy, it will be difficult to check and correct your posture.

My first Argentine tango teacher looked at me in the eyes after my first class and said: “I need to be able to see your knees”, which immediately and cynically made me think: “You must be joking. What a nice job you’ve landed yourself!”. He didn’t have a knee fetish, in the end, he just needed to check I wasn’t bending my knees at the wrong time. And now, quite a few years down the line, I would give the same advice. Wear something comfy though, Tight clothes and shoes don’t make for happy shiny people.

How long will it take to learn to dance tango?2020-07-07T20:25:38+01:00

How long is a piece of string?

We all are different. Wouldn’t it be pretty freaky if we all had the same eyes, way of walking, laugh? For that reason, we all learn tango at different speeds. Typically, what helps is:

  • Previous dance experience. It will have developed your co-ordination and your kinaesthetic memory (that means memory of physical activities, rather than mental activities).
  • Sports experience. It too will have developed your co-ordination and muscle strength. We find that pilates and yoga especially help because they help develop core strength. Martial arts are a big plus too, as they develop coordination, usage of the floor and a sense of “partner work”.
  • Previous social dance experience (the kind that involves 2 people dancing amongst other pairs of dancers). This should have given you the gist of leading and of following.

But more than anything else, what matters most is to do something you enjoy, and if you fall in love with Argentine tango, you’ll learn fairly quickly. Does it really matter how fast you learn as long as you enjoy the journey? For the overachievers screaming “of course it matters, you numpty!”, I would say it’s not how skilled you are, it’s how good you want to be. The sky is the limit and the ball in your court. We find that consistency is key in learning tango, and so is mixing tango group classes with private classes and of course joining our Los Angelitos milonga, where tango magic happens. All our classes and milongas are in North London.

What if I only want to dance with my partner?2020-07-07T20:24:21+01:00

Argentine tango is a social dance, so it’s customary to dance with a variety of partners. This is the way both our group classes and our Los Angelitos milonga (tango parties) operate. This is a good way to learn, as getting exposed to different individual dance styles will broaden your opinions. It’s all trial and error after all.

Yet, if you are not comfortable with this, that’s perfectly OK – the point is to have fun and to learn a great dance you can enjoy, not to feel pressured in any way. Simply let us know at the beginning of the class so that you and your partner will solely dance with each other.

What if I want to swap roles?2020-05-23T14:31:32+01:00

We strongly encourage role exchange, e.g. ladies dancing as leaders and gentlemen dancing as followers. After all, this is how the Argentines used to learn and practice tango when the dance originally came about in Buenos Aires. So whether you’d like to learn both roles or only the one traditionally reserved to the other gender, simply let us know at the beginning of the class.

Can I register for the whole year?2020-05-23T14:31:56+01:00

Yes, you can – and if you do, we will give you a nice discount. In this case, best is to start at the beginning of a term (please see our yearly curriculum for more information). Contact us for more details.
